Volker Heuken Sextett - Deep Field (Vinyl, CD)

"Deep Field" is the third album by the Volker Heuken Sextett, named after the deep exposures of the Hubble Space Telescope that reveal seemingly empty patches of sky as teeming fields of galaxies. That idea of listening closely shapes the music too: the broad instrumentation creates a distinctive ensemble sound in which piano and vibraphone fuse as one instrument, while two wind players form an interlocking, shared voice. The band features Volker Heuken (vibraphone, composition), Christopher Kunz (tenor saxophone), Antonia Hausmann (trombone), Lukas Grossmann (piano), Alex Bayer (bass) and Jan F. Brill (drums). Pieces such as "Pedro," the title track, "Nightcycling," "48 Miles" and the closing "Encore" combine highly organised composed structures with the spontaneity typical of jazz. Recorded in January 2023 at Rec Publika and mastered in stereo and Dolby Atmos, the album was released in 2023 on XJAZZ! Music: composed, modern jazz with a wide horizon.
