Angélicas Milicias – Villancico a 8 – Manuel de Sumaya – Score Only
Title
Angélicas Milicias – Villancico a 8 con Violines, Oboe, Violoncello y Viola – Score Only
Composer
Manuel de Sumaya
Description
Full orchestral and choral score of Angélicas Milicias, an exuberant 8-part villancico by Manuel de Sumaya (c. 1678–1755), one of the most distinguished composers of the Baroque period in New Spain. Sumaya served as maestro de capilla at Mexico City Cathedral and later at the Cathedral of Oaxaca, leaving behind a prolific body of sacred music that bridges European polyphonic tradition with the expressive richness of viceregal Hispanic America.
This work is scored for double choir (SSAATTBB) and instruments: 2 Violins, Oboe, Viola, Violoncello, and Continuo. It showcases festive, polychoral writing typical of major liturgical celebrations.
It has been recorded by ensembles such as Chanticleer, and is admired for its exuberance, lively rhythmic drive, and luminous vocal textures.
Editorial Note:
In this edition, the bass voices for both Choir I and Choir II are not explicitly written. Instead, the surviving manuscript includes bassoon-like instrumental parts, which may suggest doubling or substitution. While these lines could potentially be adapted for bass singers, I have chosen to present them as they appear in the source, without editorial intervention.
Instruments:
2 Violins, Oboe, Viola, Violoncello, SSAATT voices, plus two lower instrumental parts that may correspond to bassoon.
