Lockdown Poems: Second Wave
This is the second set of 'lockdown poems' — poems penned during the strange days of the pandemic.
The collection tells the story — in creative form — of the fears, but also of a wider range of musings, reflections and concerns that weighed on the author's mind during the second major peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. In South Africa, the second wave began in mid to late December 2020, with a higher-level lockdown announced by that country's president on 28 December.
For Meintjies, writing is a way of confronting and acknowledging the range of emotions: uncertainty, anxiety and fear coupled with empathy for the marginalised.
Commenting on Lockdown Poems (the publication that preceded this one), radio host Renos Nicos Spanoudes had this to say about Meintjies's poems: "Every one of these poems touched me deeply, speaking the raw truth of being human during this time, trying to survive and comprehend."
