Officer I Can Explain | Saddle Storms | Smoke Pipes and Open Sky Album
It wasn't speeding. It was the bagpipes. There's a difference.

He had every good intention when he pulled out of the drive. Truly. But somewhere between the pedal steel kicking in and the highland refrain hitting full stride, the speedometer got away from him an Officer found himself standing on the side of the road trying to explain the situation to dispatch with zero success. Later that same evening he got called out to Miller's field where a bonfire party was allegedly out of control — took one listen to the bagpipes, looked at his cruiser, looked at the fire, looked straight up at the stars, and made the only reasonable decision available to a man in his position. Officer I Can Explain is a full comedic Celtic punk outlaw anthem dedicated to every law enforcement professional who ever showed up to shut something down and ended up staying till midnight. The pipes made them do it. The pipes make everybody do it. Nobody is immune. - Original by Saddle Storms.

Lyrics: Blue lights in my mirror 'bout a mile outside of town Had the windows all the way down and the bagpipes cranked up loud Officer walked up slow, hand resting on his belt Said son I clocked you doing ninety in a zone I said officer honestly I don't even know I had every good intention when I pulled out of the drive But something about bagpipes and pedal steel Makes it hard to stay at 65 Now officer I understand you got a job to do But have you ever tried to drive the speed limit With a set of pipes blowing straight through you Officer I can explain It wasn't me it was the highland refrain The bagpipes made me do it I swear on my soul When the smoke and the pipes and the open sky takes hold You lose all sense of reason and all sense of speed Officer I can explain It's the pipes not me Dispatched him out to Miller's field about half past nine Said there's a party out there getting wildly out of line He rolled up slow, stepped out real tall Took one listen to them bagpipes And just stopped dead in the road y'all Said I've shut down a thousand parties in my day But I'll be honest with you people I genuinely don't know what to say Now officer I understand you got a job to do But have you ever tried to shut down a bonfire With a set of pipes blowing straight through you Officer I can explain It wasn't us it was the highland refrain The bagpipes made us do it we swear on our souls When the smoke and the pipes and the open sky takes hold You lose all sense of reason and all sense of time Officer I can explain It's the pipes not us He called it in to dispatch around midnight or so Said I need some backup out here over Dispatch said what's your situation He said just... Send somebody who knows what bagpipes are He stood there for a minute Looked back at his cruiser Looked back at the bonfire Looked straight up at the stars And somebody handed him a cold drink And he said... Well I'm off duty in twenty minutes Officer I can explain It wasn't us it was the highland refrain The bagpipes made us do it we swear on our souls When the smoke and the pipes and the open sky takes hold You lose all sense of reason and all sense of time Nobody's going home nobody's doing time It's the best kind of lawless under an open sky Officer I can explain The pipes not us The pipes not us "Dispatch this is R-12..." "...I'm gonna need a longer shift."
