CHORDimist (VST3, AU)

AI-Powered MIDI FX Plugin for Chord Generation and Playback

CHORDimist is the result of 6 years of exploration and refinement — a bridge between my years as a hip-hop producer and my life as a developer.

It was born from the challenge of creating something that could generate inspiring chord progressions and patterns — even in environments where a full 88-key keyboard simply isn’t possible.

At its core, CHORDimist combines AI-powered intelligence with human-crafted musical algorithms, blending technology and intuition to generate progressions and patterns that feel both intelligent and emotionally driven.

Designed through the lens of a hip-hop producer with over 20 years of experience, CHORDimist was created not from a developer’s perspective, but from the hands-on reality of making music. Every detail reflects the mindset of a working musician — focused on groove, feel, and immediacy, rather than theory alone.

Originally released in 2019 as a Max for Live prototype, CHORDimist has since evolved dramatically, shaped by years of user feedback and my own creative vision.

The current VST3 & AU version introduces a wide range of new features, including:

  • AI-powered Chord Progression Generation
  • AI-powered Pattern Generation
  • Advanced Arpeggiator (ARPimist)
  • MPE Pitch-Bend Modulator
  • Export to MIDI (Drag & Drop)
  • Preset Saving & Management
  • User chord recording feature to capture and save your own performances
  • Layer feature to stack multiple arpeggiators
  • Mobile layout optimized for Instagram and social media uploads
  • Various MIDI visualizers for intuitive visual feedback

I’m always open to feedback and new ideas.

⚠️ CHORDimist only generates MIDI, not audio.

CHORDimist is a MIDI effect plugin, meaning it creates and sends MIDI signals but does not generate any sound on its own.

To hear audio, you need to route CHORDimist’s MIDI output to another instrument plugin (such as a synth or sampler) that can produce sound.

In Ableton Live → Load CHORDimist on a MIDI track and set another track to receive MIDI from it, like this.

In FL Studio → Match CHORDimist’s MIDI Out port with the instrument’s MIDI In port.

In Logic Pro → Load CHORDimist as a MIDI FX before an instrument plugin.

A must have for musicians of any skill level

With complete transparency -I am primarily a guitarist. I am by no means a pianist or keyboard player. I know enough to get around, but I find myself leaning more and more into sequencers and arpeggiators to get most of my ideas out.

I've used CHORDimist as a M4L device for a while, and while the VST version has provided a bit of a learning curve, once you have a decent grasp on what you're tweaking (and how to tweak pad-local parameters) you'll be well on your way to getting some serious mileage out of this device.

It comes loaded with several preset chord progressions and genre-specific algorithms for chord generation, but you can also select whatever chord, voicing, and inversion through a few drop-menus. You have an incredibly granular level of control for playback, including bidirectional strumming, strum curving, chord layers, arpeggios, note repeats and skips, looping, swing and humanization, etc.

One of the coolest functions in the device is the built-in visualizer. I still haven't had a chance to go through and test out each one, but the device lets you turn off the rest of the UI and have a floating window to visualize whatever chord is currently playing back, which can give users a convenient way of grabbing video content to go along with their music.

As a final note (and I will be reviewing DRUMist when I spend a bit more time with it), I've had a lot of success using the M4L chordimist as a tool for generating unconventional drum loops and fills. While CHORDimist is ideally suited for, well, chords, you are by no means limited to harmonic instruments.

Don't be put off by the price. You'll only cry once, but you will easily replace 90% of whatever tools you've been using for chords and arpeggios with this device.

Quick edit: I forgot to mention another favorite function of mine - MIDI export! Whenever you have a progression you like, you can easily drag out the MIDI into another track to save (or simply save a MIDI file from the device). I wish all sequencers and arpeggiators had MIDI export built in, but this hasn't really mattered so much since I've started using CHORDimist

I must have!

CHORDimist has completely transformed the way I approach music. The program makes complex concepts feel simple and accessible, while also giving me the tools to grow creatively. It’s clear that a lot of thought and passion went into designing this, because every lesson feels practical, engaging, and inspiring. I’ve seen real progress in my playing and confidence since starting, and I highly recommend CHORDimist to anyone who wants to take their music to the next level.

Chordimist 2 review

For those who were interested in Chordimist 1 M4L device but don't use Ableton Live, this is excellent news—all of the most exciting features of the original M4L device and much more. In the crowded space of chord engine plugins like Scaler, Ripchord, and Xfer Cthulhu, Chordimist 2 offers a uniquely powerful combination of sophisticated chord engine and advanced arpeggiator. While you'll need to invest some time exploring its features to maximize its potential, this investment will pay off, particularly if chords are central to your musical compositions.
