Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta
A must-have for serious painters—an intimate look into Madrazo’s mastery, revealing the discipline, elegance, and working methods behind one of the great 19th-century painters.
Raimundo de Madrazo was born in Rome in 1841, the son of privilege and genius in equal measure. His grandfather, José, had been a court painter to royalty. His father, Federico, was the portraitist of the Spanish aristocracy, the man who set the standard for official portraiture in Madrid. Raimundo grew up in studios the way other children grew up in kitchens, surrounded by the smell of linseed oil, the sounds of critique, and the constant presence of great canvases in progress. He studied first with his father, then at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, and then left for Paris, which would become his permanent spiritual home.
Great artists have always learned by looking closely at those who came before them. For artists and collectors seeking both inspiration and deeper understanding. Fully Illustrated 130 pages. Hi-resolution images.
