Lady of the Canyon Shawl
“Trina takes her paints and threads and weaves a pattern all her own,” Joni Mitchell sings in her ‘Ladies of the Canyon’.
In this, the second shawl in the Celtic Shawl Series, those words describe perfectly a shawl which combines luscious threads with unique Aran Lace stitch patterns.
Imagine this all-season shawl at a spring wedding, on a summer evening beach stroll, wrapped around you on an autumn walk through the woodlands or used as an over-sized scarf on the coldest of winter days. Luxury will envelope you.
Stitch Patterns are both charted and written out.
The pattern is 27 pages and includes detailed construction notes and diagrams.
This shawl begins at the centre of the shawl and is knit flat circularly, from the centre out; two sides of the central square are then extended and are knit flat; edgings are knit on as the shawl is worked. There is no seaming or picking up stitches.
Emily Ocker’s Cast On (uses crochet hook), cables, provisional cast on (only 4 sts), 3 Needle Bind off (edging corners). Written instructions are included for these techniques.
Blocking this shawl is essential to bringing out the intricate interplay of cables and lace.
28 x 58” / 71 x 147 cm after blocking
Changing the Length: Although instructions are not included with the pattern, it is very easy to make this shawl longer -- simply work additional repeats of the last 32-row pattern stitch panels before working the edging across the end of the shawl - each additional repeat will add approx. 10” / 25 cm to the overall length of the shawl ( 5” / 12.5 cm at each end).
