1966 Chevelle - Concourse Level Restoration Guide
The 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 represents one of the most significant turning points in American muscle car history. This was the first year the SS396 became an official, separately serialized series — its own model line rather than an option package bolted onto the Malibu. The completely restyled body introduced the iconic Coke-bottle quarter panel contour, a flying-buttress roofline on the hardtop coupe, and simulated hood scoops that became a hallmark of the SS identity. With 72,272 SS396 models produced in 1966 (plus approximately 1,865 L35-equipped El Caminos), it was also the most ambitious GM muscle car launch to that date.
