Translational Research for Practice and Populations

Nursing Practice Identification, Description, and Change

The organization is a non-profit acute care hospital with an inpatient psychiatric unit.  The patient population in the local area is diverse.  Patients come for various ethnic, racial, religious, educational, and, socio-economic backgrounds.  The nursing process that needs change is decreasing onboarding time for psychiatric patients in the Emergency Room (ER) to transfer to the Behavioral Health Unit (BHU).   There is a constant struggle between the two departments on wait time for transferring the patient to the BHU.  The BHU is the only psychiatric unit for the ERs of the three sister hospitals within the organization.  Currently, wait times can run from 4 hours to 24 hours from when a patient arrives at the ER to arrival at the BHU.
