The city looks different from the rooftops.

Cleaner.

Quieter.

Almost innocent.

That illusion never lasts long.

Sammy walks beneath the full moon with a pistol low at her side, red leather catching flashes of silver from the skyline. Beside her, a man in a dark suit moves with the calm precision of someone who has survived too many bad nights.

No introductions.

No small talk.

Just two armed silhouettes crossing wet concrete while the city sleeps below them.

He was waiting at the address on the black card.

Midnight.

Exactly.

Sammy expected guards.

A trap.

Maybe another corpse with a message pinned to its chest.

Instead, she found him.

The man everyone told her was dead.

Again.

She glances sideways.

“You always dress like a funeral?”

He keeps walking.

“You always bring a gun to a reunion?”

Sammy looks down at the pistol.

“Only the good ones.”

That almost earns a smile.

Almost.

Ahead, the rooftop narrows into a suspended walkway connecting two towers. Beyond it, thirty floors of glass and steel rise into the night.

The headquarters of the Split Crown.

Finally.

Months of wrecked cities.

Dead signals.

Desert convoys.

Burning warehouses.

All of it leads here.

Her companion stops at the edge.

“There are forty men inside.”

Sammy raises an eyebrow.

“That all?”

“Automated security.”

“Cute.”

“Armoured response team.”

“Still cute.”

He turns toward her.

“And the man running everything knows you’re coming.”

Sammy finally smiles.

There it is.

The part she likes.

Below them, the city lights flicker.

Then every window in the tower ahead goes dark at once.

The rooftop door behind them slams shut.

Red emergency lights ignite along the bridge.

A voice rolls from hidden speakers.

“Welcome, Sammy.”

She looks at her partner.

He draws his pistol.

She raises hers.

For the first time all night, they are both smiling.

The voice continues.

“You should have come alone.”

Sammy steps onto the bridge.

Wind catches her hair.

Moonlight glints off both guns.

“No,” she says.

“This looks more fun.”

And together, they walk straight toward the tower.

Because some wars are fought alone.

This one?

Sammy just found herself a partner.
