Students can delve into the complex history of sugar in the Americas with this activity, with portions inspired and borrowed from by the Bitter Sweet Legacy Lesson Plan: Afro-Caribbean Americans and the Sugar Economy [https://www.inmotionaame.org/education/lesson.cfm@migration=10&id=10_001LP.html]. Taken from www.inmotionaame.org, students begin by reflecting on their personal sugar consumption and examining how the price of sugar has changed over time. They will then read a short narrative, answering two targeted short answer questions to deepen their understanding. Finally, divided into three teams, students will conduct research and present an oral report on one of three pivotal eras in the sugar economy of the Americas. This assignment not only aims to enhance historical knowledge but also encourages critical thinking and collaborative research skills.
