Arachnid physiology, terraforming, and uplift, worked out across deep time.

A terraforming project seeds a distant world with monkeys and a nanovirus built to accelerate their evolution, and the scientist running it means to be there when they wake up. Sabotage ends the mission, the monkeys never make it to the surface, and the virus goes to work on what is already there.
