Roman Cliffs is a small town in Mississippi that had never seen violence inside its borders. The main character, Joseph James, decides to return to his hometown to start his own business and to get his life together. Once he returns to the town, he finds things have certainly changed and not for the good. His childhood friend, Jon Keys, has been put into a mental asylum by Jon’s wife and her former boyfriend, who is now a psychiatrist. We follow James’ story as he tries to find his friend and as he discovers the reasons his friend was put into the asylum, when nothing was wrong with him at all.
A former mafia member, Peter Bugle, had betrayed the Tarantino mafia family and was quietly making his way through the country when he arrives in Roman Cliffs. He has no money, and in order to get some, Bugle decides he will turn to kidnapping rich peoples’ children and attempt to get handsome amounts of ransoms. Since he already has a taste for crime, kidnapping came easy. Bugle captures three young Mississippi girls and brings them on his travels, hoping not to be found by the Tarantino family.
Murders had been occurring throughout the United States. The FBI begins to track down a serial killer psychopath who gets the nicknamed “States Killer”. His real name is Theodore Huffman, and he picks his murders out by state and town. He soon hits the “M” states and picks out Mississippi. He then picks out the quiet town of Roman Cliffs.
This novel goes through each of these stories and follows the characters as they all begin to connect. As the story goes on, we see how Roman Cliffs is not a random destination for these criminals and odd occurrences. The mystery/murder book has many twists and turns throughout it and many interesting characters. It is a page turner.
