A New Day for Horn Octet
A New Day
for horn octet
Composed 2025
Duration: approximately 4 minutes
A New Day begins quietly and reflectively, with solo lines emerging from sustained tones and moving between members of the ensemble. As additional voices enter, the music gradually gains weight, motion, and a stronger sense of direction.
An accelerando leads into an energetic Allegro built from driving rhythms, accented figures, and melodic ideas passed throughout the octet. The eight horns alternate between independent lines, smaller ensemble groupings, and the full power of the choir. The piece ultimately brings its contrasting ideas together in a broad, affirmative conclusion.
Written for eight horns, A New Day offers substantial material across the ensemble rather than treating the lower parts only as accompaniment. It is suitable for an advanced university horn studio, professional horn ensemble, or accomplished community horn choir.
Premiered by the University of Nevada, Reno horn studio in spring 2026.
