Here is Dr Bob’s Rx for Sobriety: Trust God, Clean House, Help Others

Dr. Bob is the co founder of Alcoholics Anonymous

Dr. Bob opened his medical practice in Akron, Ohio in 1912 and practiced medicine as a surgeon until 1948. After the passing of the 18th Amendment and prohibition he wrote himself prescriptions for whiskey, which was the only legal way the government allowed one to get alcohol.

After meeting Bill Wilson in 1936 and becoming the co-founder of AA, he was the one who helped keep Bill's feet on the ground with his practical admonitions to "Keep it Simple."

Deeply spiritual, the "prescription" for sobriety "Trust God, Clean House, and Help Others," as a synopsis of the twelve steps is attributed Dr. Bob. Although the prescription pad is definitely a reproduction of Dr. Bob's, as is the signature, we are unsure if he actually wrote this out on his pad--if we find out, it will be noted here.

But if he wrote himself prescriptions to drink whiskey--we don't doubt that he actually wrote out a prescription for sobriety. We reproduced his prescription so you can print and pass these out.

Dr Bob’s last words to Bill W were:

“Remember Bill, let’s not louse this thing up. Let’s keep it simple” ~DR. BOB and the Good Oldtimers, p. 343
