It's Only a Walk: Nine things Cyprus never wrote down

A dead woman's house. A hand-drawn map. Nine points, none of them labelled. And on the back, in black biro, four words: Walk it or don't.

Andreas Loizou is forty-one, charming, busy, and hollow. He has fourteen unfinished projects, a marriage running on a well-developed system for not making things things, and ten days set aside to sell an aunt's house on Cyprus. He stays nine months.

Because the map in her kitchen drawer is real. Its nine points lead him across a divided island: a shopping street with a border running through it, an airport sealed since 1974 where the departure board still shows the last morning, a painted church, a city where nothing is worn, a mountain that hears everything and can help no one. At each of them, one of the nine things the island has never written down. Not mysticism. Nine usable insights about attention, worry, and the worlds we build without noticing, each one testable with a pen, in a week.

And once a month, somewhere on the coast, there is a party. A hundred people of eleven nationalities face the sea, and the sun goes down, and it takes four minutes, and it asks nobody to believe anything at all.

In October, eleven people alive knew all nine. By the following June there were seven, and one of them was a man nobody on the island had heard of.
