My name is Mark Maxwell. I'm 33, Irish and live in London with my wife who I married in 2023.
My Career
My career started in investment banking / trading across Sydney and Singapore, which was a glamorous industry to be in but I just for a change of environment and to move into a realm (sales) that was more suited to me than the constant analysis of banking. I left Google at 25 to start a podcast and travel South America (as you do!) before coming home to start a tech company around career guidance and helping people find the job that suited them. I had a podcast with the same mission that had 3,000 weekly listeners which I was really enjoying.
That business failed unfortunately, but I loved the scrappiness of the startup environment. I joined a US startup that was moving to Europe. It had a valuation of $50m and I stayed until it had a valuation of $5.6bn which was amazing! I did sales, partnerships and actually moved to London with them to launch their UK business. I then did the same with another US startup moving here, launching their Europe business, and am now doing the same again!
My Story
The other big force that has affected my life and career has been my heart. I had a cardiac arrest at the age of 18 and spent a week in a coma. This really turned things upside down for me and made me re-evaluate my life and, how to make the absolute most of it and how not to waste it - hence all the moving around and search for a job that I really love. The learnings along the way about optimising life and career for a tailored individual are what my course, and my entire approach to career guidance, are made up of.
