*The best way to understand FM (IMO), is to understand the 2-OP structure very thoroughly. The 4/6/9/11+ OP structures are quite stunning, but those are to build realistic, complex, physical-sounding, and uncanny sounds. In 2-OP structures, you can only produce FM-sounding sounds. Knowing 2-OP thoroughly is about 80% of it.
*The point of FM is all about generating side-bands, around your fundamental frequency. Each of those sidebands are peaks in the spectrum. Harmonic frequencies are generated by altering the phase of the waveform, calculated from the time-domain, not the frequency domain (Additive Synthesis).
*It all boils down to Frequency, Amplitude, and the ratio between modulator to carrier (eg. 1:1, 4:1, 1:4)
