In the 8th poem of Kalevala Väinämöinen meets the daughter of Louhi. The maiden of the North is sitting in the clouds making embroidery and Väinämöinen asks her to marry him. The maiden teases Väinämöinen and promises to marry him only if he manages to make a boat from spears. Väinämöinen’s axe head turn to his knee, cleaving a mighty wound into it. He can not quell the bleeding so he have to leave the maiden and try to find someone to close his wound.

The garment is worked from the top down. The neckline ribbing and yoke are worked in the round using a circular needle and the beginning of the round will be at the center back. The back neck will be shaped using short rows. Then, for the raglan increases the beginning of the round is moved to the left back raglan line. After completing the yoke, the sleeve stitches are placed on hold and worked later.
