Turkish Music - the most complete survey, summary in existence in English with lots of the music.

This is a whole record of all the different kinds of Turkish music. If you want to know what kinds there are, maybe because you are going to Turkey, this will tell you. A record (with each song introduced) and a booklet of over thirty pages will describe the instruments, the places to find it, and the uses in Turkish society. There is even a description of makams, probably the only description you can find in English, for you musicologists.

I lived in Turkey for five years, traveling all over Turkey to perform and learn folk dances. We recorded some of these songs in a studio in Istanbul and took others from existing recordings.
