Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known globally as Eminem, was born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri. His upbringing, however, largely took place in the tough streets of Detroit, Michigan. His early life was marked by hardship and instability, moving frequently between various schools and homes. His father abandoned the family when Eminem was just a baby, leaving his mother, Debbie Mathers, to raise him and his younger brother, Nathan, alone.

This tumultuous upbringing contributed to a fraught relationship with his mother, marked by allegations of neglect and abuse. Despite these challenges, or perhaps because of them, Eminem found solace and expression in music. Inspired by the likes of LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys, he started rapping at the age of 14 under the moniker "M&M," which later morphed into "Eminem."
