The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized gun dog originally bred for flushing and retrieving game.

Appearance

• Size: 18–20 inches (45–51 cm) tall, 40–50 lbs (18–23 kg)
• Build: Athletic, balanced, slightly longer body than height
• Coat: Medium-length, feathered ears and legs, wavy or flat
• Colors: Commonly liver & white or black & white; can have ticking or roan

Temperament

• Friendly, affectionate, and sociable
• Highly intelligent and trainable
• Very energetic — needs a lot of exercise
• Good with families and kids, but can be clingy (“Velcro dog”)

Health

• Life expectancy: 12–14 years
• Common issues: Hip dysplasia, ear infections (due to floppy ears), eye problems (PRA, cataracts), and obesity if under-exercised

Behavior

• Not a couch dog: Requires mental stimulation and physical activity
• Loves to retrieve and swim
• Strong prey drive — may chase birds or small animals
• Separation anxiety is common if left alone too much
