The Rough Collie is a medium-to-large herding dog breed, originally from Scotland, and most famously associated with the fictional character Lassie.
Appearance
- Coat: They’re known for their long, dense double coat (though a shorter-haired variety, the Smooth Collie, also exists). The rough coat gives them that flowing, regal look.
- Colors: Common shades include sable and white, tricolor (black, white, and tan), blue merle, and white.
- Build: Elegant, athletic, with a long, wedge-shaped head and an intelligent, alert expression.
Temperament
- Personality: Gentle, loyal, and highly affectionate with families. They’re good with kids, often described as sensitive and intuitive.
- Intelligence: Very smart and trainable, but also sensitive to harsh corrections. They respond best to positive reinforcement.
- Energy: Moderate. They enjoy activity and mental stimulation but aren’t as hyper as some other herding breeds.
Care
- Exercise Needs: Daily walks and play are enough; they’re not as demanding as Border Collies but still need engagement.
- Grooming: The Rough variety requires regular brushing (at least several times a week) to prevent mats. They shed heavily, especially seasonally.
- Health: Prone to certain conditions like Collie Eye Anomaly, hip dysplasia, and sensitivity to some medications (due to the MDR1 gene mutation).
Best Suited For
Rough Collies thrive in homes where they get companionship, light-to-moderate activity, and affection. They make excellent family dogs, therapy dogs, and are natural watchdogs—protective without being aggressive.
