The Face of Clemency

Clemency has one question and no way to answer it from inside her own head, and everyone who loves her has already settled it on her behalf.

Her sister has read the literature and knows exactly what she is looking for. Her uncle has decided it is grief, because grief is survivable. The people who chalk their faces white have decided she is the only honest voice in the country, and they are quoting her own songs back at her as proof. And the Hearts? Well they love her unreservedly.

What she does about it takes her off the ward and onto a castle esplanade in front of eight thousand people, into a chapel with one door, and then four thousand miles south to a camp on a dry riverbed, where forty thousand people are waiting for a doctor and the last convoy has already gone.

Nobody in the book can settle her question. Nobody outside it can either. That is the point, and it holds to the last page.
