BACK TO ZERO
I slept in my car while still showing up for work.
Years later, I had rebuilt everything: a stable job, my own apartment, a family, a child, and a house.
I thought I had finally reached security.
Then my marriage broke down. The house had to be sold. And I found myself facing the edge again.
BACK TO ZERO is the true story of what I got wrong about financial security — and what I’m trying to build differently this time.
I’M NOT WRITING THIS FROM THE FINISH LINE.
This isn’t a story about becoming rich.
It’s not a victory lap.
And it’s not about blaming someone else for what went wrong.
I made bad decisions. I ignored bills. I spent money trying to make my life look more stable than it was. I accumulated debt. I lost my driver’s license. I lost places to live.
Eventually, my car became my home.
I showered at work. I ate in the car. I slept in the car.
Every morning, I put on my work clothes and showed up.
Then I rebuilt.
Work. An apartment. Stability. A relationship. Fatherhood. A house.
From the outside, it looked like I had made it.
But when my marriage ended and the house had to be sold, I was forced to confront something I had misunderstood for years:
The house was never the foundation.
Neither was the salary.
Neither was the relationship.
Neither was the car, the credit, or the image of having everything together.
A paycheck is not the same as security.
Real security is having enough of your own foundation left when something changes.
That is what BACK TO ZERO is about.
MORE THAN A BOOK.
This is a true story — but you won’t just read mine.
The second half turns the lessons into practical exercises designed to make you examine your own financial foundation: where it is strong, where it is fragile, and what happens if one part of your life suddenly changes.
Inside, you’ll work through:
• My Survival Number — calculate the minimum amount you actually need each month to keep your life standing.
• The Debt Reality Check — put your debts, payments, interest rates and priorities in one place.
• The Independence Fund — build a buffer designed to buy you time, options and distance from panic.
• If Everything Changed Tomorrow — stress-test what happens if your job, relationship or housing changes.
• The 30-Day Emergency Plan — protect the essentials and stabilize your situation if income disappears.
• Fixed Cost Audit — identify the recurring expenses making your life financially fragile.
• Income Resilience Map — examine how your existing skills could create income beyond one employer.
• Housing Contingency Plan — know where you could go and what you could afford before a housing crisis makes the decision for you.
• 90-Day Rebuild — turn rebuilding into concrete, measurable steps.
• My Foundation Scorecard — score the resilience of the foundation underneath your life.
WHO THIS IS FOR
BACK TO ZERO is for you if you earn money but still don’t feel financially safe.
If one unexpected bill, one lost job, one breakup, or one housing problem could turn your life upside down.
If you’ve ever spent money trying to look more successful than you actually felt.
Or if you’re tired of building a life that only works when everything goes according to plan.
WHAT THIS IS NOT
This is not financial advice.
It is not a get-rich-quick system.
It does not promise financial freedom in 30 days.
And it is not written by someone pretending to have solved life.
I’m still inside the story.
The first time I reached the bottom, I had almost no plan.
This time, I know what I’m trying to build.
Not a life that can never go wrong.
A life that’s harder to knock down.
