The first night a sentence is placed within reach—if you tell me to stop I will stop—and Ethan does not spend it. Morning calls it weather. The miles that follow call it rules.

Phone on the counter. Announce the door. Ask if you need to come. Sit. Water. Dinner finishes. Ethan learns the stillness in a mouth that means come here and the tired jaw that means not tonight, stay close anyway. He folds towels in threes so the house will show he was in it correctly. Friends thin. Listings lag. In grocery light he can still see the automatic doors, the unused exit, the man he would have to become on the other side of them.

Marcus keeps count and calls the count responsibility. Ethan keeps three stories alive at once and feels them eat each other in the dark. The window cracks halfway because he runs hot when he is tired. What he cannot give back is already in the cab with them.
