M1 Abrams
The original M1 Abrams entered service in 1980 as the baseline version of the Abrams family. It was armed with a 105mm rifled gun, rather than the later 120mm, and featured early composite (Chobham-type) armor for improved protection. Powered by a gas turbine engine, it offered excellent speed and acceleration for its size. While more basic in terms of electronics compared to later upgrades, it still introduced advanced fire-control systems and thermal imaging, setting a new standard for modern main battle tanks at the time.
