Before You Communicate Better
You've been told to communicate better. To use I-statements. To set boundaries. To stay calm and say what you mean.
And you've tried. So why does the same conversation keep going sideways?
What no one tells you: communication skills don't work when you don't yet understand what's happening underneath the words. Before you have the conversation, you need to look at what you're carrying into it.
Before You Communicate Better is a four-part worksheet that takes you underneath the conversation before it starts.
Part 1: Name the Pattern You're In You're not approaching this conversation as a neutral person. You're approaching it as the Over-Giver, the Distancer, the Fixer, the Peacekeeper, or the Performer. Each pattern has an agenda in the conversation. Until you name it, it speaks for you.
Part 2: Name What You're Actually Afraid Of Underneath every difficult conversation is a fear that's driving the whole thing. This section helps you name it specifically, because until you do, it runs the show.
Part 3: Whose Voice Is That? That worst-case scenario you keep imagining? It didn't start here. It started somewhere earlier, in a house where speaking up had consequences. This section helps you hear the old voice clearly enough to stop letting it direct the present conversation.
Part 4: Communication Problem or Safety Problem? This is the question that changes everything. Not every communication breakdown is a skills problem. Some of them are safety problems. Trying to communicate your way through a safety problem doesn't work. It just teaches you to say the thing more cleverly while still not feeling safe enough to mean it. This section helps you tell the difference.
This is for you if:
- You've tried to have the conversation and walked away feeling worse than before you started
- Something inside you goes quiet, defensive, or sideways the moment it actually matters
- You're tired of being told to communicate better when what you need is to understand why the same conversation keeps happening on repeat
- You want to show up differently but you're not sure what keeps getting in the way
