One bottle of lighter fluid. One very cooperative bonfire. One man who will never need to shave again.

Everything was perfect. Waylon on the speaker, burgers on the grill, cold beer in the cooler, kids running sparklers in the dark. Then the fire started dying and somebody made the executive decision that lighter fluid was the reasonable solution to that problem. The bonfire had opinions about this. The whole yard went silent for about a half a second before the wife looked over and said well I didn't reckon. Best Fire on the Fourth is a Fourth of July love letter to rural American summers, cold beer, bad judgment, and the one person at every single backyard gathering who absolutely never learns. The fire department showed up silent, did their job, packed up, and drove away without a single word. The cops mumbled something about sparklers. The neighbors showed up entirely for the gossip. And one man stood there pink, glowing, and freshly shaved by combustion, staring into the middle distance while his wife was already on the phone. Waylon would have approved. - Original by Saddle Storms

Lyrics: Well we gathered in the backyard on the fourth of July Cold beer in the cooler underneath a clear sky Waylon on the speaker and the burgers on the grill Bonfire burning steady giving everybody a thrill Kids running circles with their sparklers in the dark Everything was perfect in this little corner of the park Well the fire started dying as the night wore on Someone grabbed the lighter fluid thought it wouldn't be long Gave that bonfire one good shot just to bring it back Nobody saw it coming when it answered with a CRACK The whole yard went silent for about a half a second Then the wife looked over and said well I didn't reckon Best fire on the fourth this whole town's seen all year Brought the neighbors running and it brought the gossips near Red and blue came rolling in with all their glory shining Wife was on the phone before the smoke was even climbing He stood there pink and glowing with a brand new clean shaved face Warm warning from the bonfire putting him back in his place Best fire on the fourth Best fire on the fourth Lit up the whole county Best fire on the fourth Well the cops showed up and blocked the road with that familiar sigh Mumbling something about sparklers and a quiet fourth of July The crowd came out in numbers hadn't seen since the parade Everyone wanted gossip before the papers got it made Officers just shaking heads and watching from the street Thinking I went through the academy for THIS tonight repeat Fire department pulled up quiet didn't say a word Didn't lecture didn't question like they hadn't even heard Just unpacked their equipment did the job they came to do Packed it right back up again and disappeared from view No paperwork mentioned not a single word was said Just a look that said it all as they drove off to bed Best fire on the fourth this whole town's seen all year Brought the neighbors running and it brought the gossips near Red and blue stood watching while the fire department worked Wife just shook her head and smiled knowing that it hurt He stood there pink and glowing with a brand new clean shaved face Warm warning from the bonfire putting him right back in his place Best fire on the fourth Best fire on the fourth Lit up the whole county Best fire on the fourth Fire department left without a word... Cops went home to their sparklers... Crowd got their gossip... And somewhere a man learned... that a dying fire... is just a dying fire... leave it alone...
