The German Shepherd is a large, intelligent, and versatile working dog originally bred in Germany for herding sheep and protecting livestock.

Appearance

• Size: Males: 24–26 inches at the shoulder; Females: 22–24 inches
• Weight: 50–90 pounds
• Build: Strong, athletic, with a slightly elongated body
• Coat: Double coat—dense, straight, and harsh; common colors include black & tan, sable, and solid black

Temperament

• Highly intelligent and trainable
• Loyal and protective, making them excellent guard and police dogs
• Energetic and alert; needs daily physical and mental exercise
• Can be aloof with strangers but very bonded to family
