The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, strong, and gentle working breed originally from the Swiss Alps.

• Origin: Switzerland (specifically the Bern region)
• Group: Working Group (AKC)
• Size: Males 25–27.5 inches tall, 85–115 lbs; Females slightly smaller
• Coat: Thick, long, and tri-colored (black, rust, and white)
• Temperament: Calm, affectionate, loyal, and good with children
• Life Span: 6–8 years (shorter due to size and susceptibility to cancer)
• Exercise Needs: Moderate—daily walks and some play
• Trainability: Intelligent but can be slow to mature; consistent, positive training works best
• Health Concerns: Hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat, and various cancers

Berners were bred to pull carts and drive cattle, but today they're cherished as family companions due to their gentle nature and striking looks. They do best in cooler climates and need space to move.
