He took the leash and did not ask.

Diane is still on the edge of the marriage bed when the truck leaves with Ranger in it, the sheet stuck to the heat that is not a husband’s, the house suddenly all vent and tile and a bowl that will not be needed the same way. One step back from that doorway: a split-level outside Dayton, a radio already on in the garage, a woman who stopped arguing with the scale and started letting the waistband sit where her body chose. Mark is invoices, parts runs, a hand that scratches a ruff and does not know what the fur has been doing. Ranger is weight. Chest against the backs of her knees. Skull in her lap. The spare-room door left the width of a hand, or shut until the click lives in her teeth.

What starts as management—holding a tail-base so nothing tears—does not stay management. Locked minutes. A laugh track through a cracked door. A word she spends on a floor: good. She wants from the dog what the marriage stopped offering without requiring her to become smaller first. She wants from Mark only the silhouette of a household that does not need a new story. The neighbor says weird. She says dogs get weird. The crate. The hardware-store hour she is too tired to translate into another room.

Keys change hands without a speech. Someone keeps the official rooms. Someone keeps the silence. The bowl is still on the mat in the morning.
