EarthSea Cowl (PDF Knitting Pattern)
Earthsea is a series of fantasy books written by the Ursula K. Le Guin. In the early 2000s, an anime movie was created, inspired by Le Guin’s books, and Aoi Teshima sings the beautiful and heartfelt Therru’s Song (Teru No Uta).
The blue of the sea meets earthy greens as the lace pattern captures the lapping ocean waves and the cables remind one of the gnarled tree trunks of the ancient forests.
These sea-earth elements are mirrored in the scalloped Latvian Twist cast on (picture tutorial included) and the Rolled Hem Bind Off. Wear it with either side up or down for two completely different looks from the same pattern. In white, this cowl would be the perfect accent to a winter wedding.
The pattern incorporates an easy lace / cable combination. It is a wonderful introduction to lace and cable knitting – simple enough not to intimidate the beginner yet the finished design is impressive. For the experienced knitter it is a quick knit with stunning results.
Lace and cable pattern is charted^ with written directions provided.
Knit in the round; no seaming. The Latvian Twist Cast On is worked flat; then work is joined in the round. Work begins with one colour, a transition area in the middle interlaces both colours and then the cowl is finished in the second colourway.
