DRUMist 2 (VST3, CLAP, AUv2, M4L)

DRUMist 2 is a MIDI effect that writes drum patterns and plays them in time with your DAW. Pick a Model, press Generate, and it writes eight bars of kick, snare, hi-hat, tom, ride and cymbal for any drum instrument.

The patterns come from human-crafted algorithms. DRUMist has been developed since 2019, and its rules and probabilities were worked out by hand from years of listening to and studying real music: where the kick and snare land, which notes are ghosted or accented, how the time swings and how a phrase ends. Thirteen Models cover Neo Soul, Trap, Funky, Detroit, Underground, Boom Bap, Jazz, Bossa Nova, 70s Funk, Breakbeats, IDM, Drumline and PolyRhythm. Every press gives a new pattern, and switching Models plays the same seed in another style; switch back for the exact pattern you had.

Shape the groove drum by drum. Kick, snare, hi-hat, tom, ride and cymbal each take their own Swing, Grid, Human, Velocity, random velocity and Chance, or follow shared global settings, and Open turns hi-hats open. The dice draws a new variation of the same pattern, and Auto writes a new pattern at the end of every loop.

Cut the pattern into slices from a sixteenth note to eight bars. The selected slice loops with your song, Follow moves to the next or a random slice at each loop end, and incoming MIDI notes switch slices as you play. Drag a slice onto another to swap them, or hold Option/Alt to copy.

500 factory MIDI patterns are included, and you can add your own MIDI files and folders. DRUMist 2 finds the drum parts in imported MIDI, so the track settings and the four MIDI Maps work on your files too. Drag the result into your DAW with Export To MIDI, or save it as a MIDI file.

The large display shows a piano roll that zooms down to a single beat and scrolls with the playhead, or one of four views: Beatmaker, a producer's desk you can circle and zoom down to an overhead pad camera; Beat Studio, a producer finger-drumming at a desk at night; Drummer, a drummer at a kit in a studio drum room; and Circle, the pattern drawn around a circle in six looks. Each view plays along with the notes DRUMist 2 sends, with its own looks and a fullscreen mode. Eight colour palettes and eleven drum rack looks set how the notes and pads light up.

DRUMist 2 generates MIDI, not sound. Place it before a drum instrument, or route its MIDI output to a drum instrument track.
