John Singer Sargent not only dazzled with paint but also left behind quick, pointed tips for the budding artist, advice rooted in his own lifelong devotion to drawing. Too often, his reputation as the supreme portraitist of his age overshadows the foundation on which his art was built: extraordinary draftsmanship. From the outset, Sargent treated drawing not as a mechanical step but as the living core of his art. His sketchbooks, studies, and restless search for gesture and form reveal a mind constantly probing the figure, the rhythms of drapery, and the sweep of movement. This first volume follows his early growth as a designer—testing every possibility of line, weight, and proportion, until he emerged as the consummate professional whose command of form gave him unmatched freedom with paint. 84 pages, fully illustrated.

Sketch Everything!

Message by Sargent, in this monograph was excellent! A reminder to those draftsmen, painters, artists, who on occasion, become “stuck”. Truly, if one is attentive to all that surrounds, as Sargent states, there is no location, or subject where beauty can’t be found and lessons of visual communication through one’s craft, regardless of medium, lacks opportunity for improvement!
