"How much of modernism went unenacted in its permanent record of published works?" asks the editor. Certainly there was one important omission to note: the collection of Carl Rakosi's poems, which several publishers intended to publish throughout his earlier career.
This new volume brings together, for the first time, all the poems Rakosi wrote as an "Objectivist," together with his other poems of the 1920s and 1930s, printed in their original versions.
The poems in this volume differ from those that appeared in his Collected Poems, published in 1986, because the poems of that volume represented successive states of revision which were there gathered in a way that created a singular unity for that volume; the purpose of this current volume is to provide, as far as possible, a reliable account of what Rakosi wrote in the 1920s and 1930s. Working with Rakosi, Andrew Crozier has produced a carefully edited volume that will point up the innovativeness and talent of Rakosi's early writing.
