The plant is native to southern Asia and the Asia Pacific region. Its first written mention in Chinese literature dates from 1178. It has a long tradition of culture in India, Taiwan, the Philippines and Southeast Asia. In 1784, the Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) classified it in the citrus genus.
