Red-Green-Black/Pan-African CRA Mathematics Mat

Making mathematics culturally responsive can be challenging yet rewarding. Many math teachers are familiar with using the concrete-representational-abstract (CRA) model to address students' mathematical needs. This CRA Model Mat serves as a graphic organizer for students to manipulate their concrete objects, draw different visual representations of their models, and write abstract equations. This CRA Model Mat has the colors of the Red-Green-Black (RGB) Pan-Africanism flag.

The RGB Flag has 3 focal colors to honor the experiences and cultural diversity of people who live throughout the African Diaspora.

• Red: the blood lost and shed by and on the behalf of the descendants of Africans
• Green: the life and vitality of the motherland (i.e. Africa)
• Black: the representation of the people who are descendants of Africans

• Encourage students to use this laminated mat with manipulatives and dry erase makers
• Use different culturally significant manipulatives to reinforce learning about Pan-Africanism (e.g. black-eyed peas, coins, African game pieces, etc.)
