The summer heat settles early under the dense forest canopy, trapping humidity, resin, and a silence that never quite empties. In the secluded cabin at the end of the long gravel track, Marcus and Elena move through ordinary days—morning coffee on the porch, slow swims in the green creek, evenings when the air refuses to cool—while years of unspoken awareness press closer with every degree of warmth.  

Her mother remains present for most of the hours, leaving only short windows that never last long enough. Inside those stolen spans the smallest contacts begin: a hand lingering at the nape while applying sunscreen, a bare knee resting against a thigh on the porch steps, bodies drifting nearer in the cool water. Each touch is careful, unfinished, and already heavier than the air itself. The forest listens with them—insect drone, distant gravel, the constant risk of return.  

What starts as almost-invisible acts deepens into deliberate possession, every escalation paced by the clock and the knowledge that the hours must be folded away again. The heat never becomes background. It lives in the slow drying of sweat, the slick evidence left on skin, the way every limited intimacy continues to sound after the mother comes back. By the time the canopy begins to thin, the residue of those progressive, haunted encounters has already become permanent—beautiful, unfinished, and impossible to set down.
