THE GRANOPHYRE 2024122416448RT1PUB
This rock is a “granophyre”. A what? That, a granophyre. The beginning of the explanation is not easy either: “subvolcanic rock of the Upper Ordovician… of leucogranitic formation…”.
In simpler words, the granophyre of Ribes de Freser is a lava rock that was inside the chimney of a volcano. When the volcano went out, the rock was hidden. Then, with the folding that gave rise to the Pyrenees, it reappeared on the surface and this is what is seen now.
One of the tips of the granophyre has an elevation of 998 meters. In order to promote tourism, a few years ago a via ferrata was created that runs along the various crests of this formation.
It seems that this granophyre is a rarity, since only this sample has been found in all of Catalonia. There are formations of this type all over the world. Although they are often due to volcanic activity, they may also have been formed by the impact of a meteorite that caused the rocks to melt.
