Spectra 9 Plus Advanced Portable Breast Pump

Welcoming a new member to the family is a joy barely anything can compare to. Every parent wants the best for their babies. Thanks to modern inventions, breast pumps are the helpful assistant of many new moms. They are becoming more and more popular for their fair prices, effective use and smart (and getting smarter) designs . However, the best breast pump isn’t the most expensive, but one that suits your needs and lifestyles. Before settling on one, here are certain things you should keep in mind.

What kinds of breast pumps are there?

On the market right now, there are currently three main kinds: manual, battery, and electric breast pumps.

Manual breast pumps

Manual breast pump requires more manpower because you will need to pump with your own hands. They are, in return, much cheaper. If you’re only going to use breast pumps to complement your milk supply, a manual pump will probably suffice. But if you’re planning to substitute entirely breastfeeding with bottle-feeding, a manual for sure cannot live up to this demand since you will need to pump multiple times (usually 8 to 10 times) per day.

Battery breast pumps

Battery breast pumps are more portable since you won’t have to be tethered to an outlet to pump. They are more expensive than manual but more powerful, allowing for multiple pumps per day. What you do need to worry about, though, is to make sure that the battery is sufficiently charged if you’re planning to take it away from home because you don’t want the pump to die mid-session. The model recommended in the article - the Spectra S9 - is a smart design that combines both a built-in battery and an electric cord, giving you that back-up you need. In case the battery runs out, you can plug the charger in. In case you can’t find an outlet, you can switch back to the battery. Best of both worlds! The S9 also lasts for the entirety of three 30-minute pumping sessions on a single charge.

Electric breast pumps

Electric breast pumps are often more heavy-duty and can handle large amounts of pumps. They are, in turn, bulkier and not ideal to be carried around, and they also cost more. However, new models, like the S9, are electric but surprisingly lightweight (the S9 weighs at just 239g), making it possible for you to flip them into your bag. If you’re not planning to pump that regularly, an electric pump might be unnecessary.

Accessories

Modern breast pumps have some very useful accessories that we’re sure you wouldn’t want to miss.

Breast shields

Breast shields are necessary in protecting your milk from outside bacteria and from getting into the machine, thereby preserving the hygiene of both the milk and the pump itself. Breast shields come in different sizes, so make sure you choose the pairs that fit. The Spectra S9 is a particularly small model, so the default shields are rather small - only 28mm in diameter, though bigger ones - 24mm and 32mm - are also available for purchase. If this is still not enough, then the good news is that the S9 is also compatible with many Mandela breast shields which come in more variety. Worry no more about not being able to find your size! Unlike the S9, many models don’t even have breast shields to begin with, so kudos to Spectra for this accommodation.

LED screen

It is already a lot of work being a parent, so you wouldn’t want to spend more time on a breast pump that requires hours of reading the instructions just to figure out how to use it. That, unfortunately, is a problem with many advanced models, who often have lots of features that get unused because users never really know how to use them.

The Spectra S9 is not only simple to use, but also has a LED screen that tells you what it’s doing. By looking at the screen, you know information such as how much time you need each session, how frequently you pump, the suction power you often pump at, and so on. This is helpful in helping you understand your body and in building a regular pumping schedule.
