Arban Cornet Method
Arban – Complete Conservatory Method for Cornet
This is one of those books that, in my opinion, every brass player should have on the stand.
I’ve used Arban for years and years — right back to when I was first learning to play — and I still use it now, both in my own practice and constantly in my teaching. There are very few method books that cover such a huge amount of brass playing in one place.
From articulation, flexibility and scales through to intervals, ornamentation, multiple tonguing, characteristic studies and variation-style solos, Arban covers just about every technique you may ever need as a brass player. It can be used from the early stages of learning right through to professional-level playing, with exercises that you can keep returning to throughout your entire playing career.
It is particularly useful because it isn’t just a collection of technical exercises. There is plenty of musical material in the book too, so technique can be developed alongside phrasing, style, endurance and control.
Whether you are a student, teacher, amateur player or professional, this is one of the real staples of brass playing and a book I genuinely believe is worth owning.
