BENTHE

Earthy but elegant Benthe has several eye-catching features that make her stand out from the crowd. First of all of course the decadent cabled sleeves that seem to grow organically out of the 2 x 2 rib at the sleeve cap. Then there’s the interesting construction that results in a modified drop shoulder shape with some simple cabling along the armholes and the back raglan lines.

With instructions for two different collars and several options for the sleeve length, Benthe has all the makings of a favorite sweater for any style preference.

CONSTRUCTION

Benthe is worked from the top down. First, the back yoke is worked back and forth until the underarm. Then, stitches are picked up from the slanted edges of the back yoke to work the back and front shoulders. The shoulders are joined by casting on stitches for the front neck, and the front yoke is worked to the underarm, where front and back are joined to work the body in the round. For the body you can choose to work the sweater with or without horizontal bust darts and / or a slight V-shaping of the body.

For the sleeves, stitches are picked up around the armhole. The sleeve caps are shaped using German short rows, after which the sleeves are worked in the round.

There are two options for the neckline, directions for both a crew neck and a cowl neck are given.

The pattern includes instructions for horizontal bust darts. The darts are optional; instructions for a sweater with and without darts are given.

Benthe is designed to have approx 7.5 cm / 3” of positive ease around the bust.

The sample is shown in size S, with horizontal bust darts and slight V-shaping of the body. It has approx 5 cm / 2” of positive ease.

Worsted weight yarn with a good stitch definition.

Crew neck sweater approx 850 [900, 950, 1050, 1150, 1300, 1400] m / 930 [985, 1040, 1150, 1370, 1420, 1530] yards.

Cowl neck sweater approx 950 [1000, 1050, 1150, 1250, 1410, 1510] m / 1040 [1090, 1150, 1160, 1370, 1540, 1650] yards.

NEEDLES

Needle A (for the body, the sleeves and the cowl neck)

One 80 cm / 30” circular needle, and a set of needles for working small circumferences in the round (DPN’s, 1 long circular or 2 short circulars) in size needed to obtain gauge listed.

Suggested needle size: 4.5 mm / US #7.

Needle B (for the ribbing and the cowl neck)

One 80 cm / 30” circular needle, and a set of needles for working small circumferences in the round.

Suggested needle size: 3.5 mm / US #4.

Needle C (for the transitional rounds of the cowl neck)

One 40 cm / 15” circular needle, or a set of needles for working small circumferences in the round.

Suggested needle size: 4 mm / US #6.
