The Australian Shepherd, often called the "Aussie," is a highly intelligent, energetic, and loyal herding dog originally developed in the United States—not Australia, despite the name.

Size: Medium (18–23 inches tall, 40–65 lbs)

Coat: Medium-length, double coat; can be straight or wavy

Colors: Merle (blue or red), black, red, all with or without white and tan markings

Eyes: Often striking—blue, brown, amber, or heterochromia (two different colors)

Temperament: Smart, eager to please, highly active, good with families and kids
