I was sketching a design for a custom punch needle request when I realized it could make a fun embroidery pattern as well. What started off as a couple of fish soon turned into a school of geometric fish visible through a porthole into the sea. I immediately started to fill the fish in with a few different stitches. I loved how it looked in its minimalism but then thought to myself it might be nice to give people the option to keep going. So I added some detailed stitches on top and gave it a little extra color. The Porthole To The Fish pattern gives you the option to either stop after you complete the fill stitches or keep stitching by adding a few details on top. It’s a great way to use leftover embroidery floss and create your own one of a kind school of fish. As someone who receives a lot of comfort from the ocean, stitching this pattern was a nice way to feel connected when I’m unable to visit.Pattern Information
This hand embroidery pattern is for those with embroidery experience or those who want to practice new to them stitches. The pattern includes the following:🧵 Supplies list, including coordinating DMC color numbers and names
🧵 Suggested stitch type and number of floss strands used
🧵 Three versions of the pattern (one used for printing and transferring - the only version to scale, one fill stitches/color guide, and one detailed stitches/color guide)
Please note that the pattern does not include written stitch directions. I have included links to video tutorials on YouTube that I created for each stitch used in the pattern. The links can be found in the required skills section of the pattern. I also include a link to my video tutorial on YouTube of me embroidering the pattern (including the fill stitches) using a 4" hoop (I printed the pattern at 45%).
Besides my hoop all materials used are either vintage, thrifted, or repurposed, because of this at times I will use a discontinued brand/color or be unsure of the color number used. In these cases I will include a suggested replacement. I used one discontinued brand in the sample: American Thread Co Star 1115 - Peacock (Closest substitute DMC 3844 - Dark Bright Turquoise)
The pattern is appropriate for a 8” circular hoop. I used a 7” hoop in the sample because it is what I had available. If you would like to use a 7” embroidery hoop (as pictured) I suggest transferring the pattern while your fabric is already stretched on the hoop. This way you will have enough space for the bolts of the porthole.
