Advanced Fiqh of Takfeer

8 week course exploring the concept of Takfeer.

Sometimes compared to 'ex-communication', Takfeer refers to considering, declaring, and/or treating another person as a non-Muslim, usually after that person had previously been Muslim. A dangerous process that has implications for the accused in relation to their sanctity, family relationships, marriage, inheritance, rights, and penalty under the law of many countries today and under a theoretical Islamic government.

The process as understood by Islamic law is complex, with clear distinctions between the role of a layman and that of a court or judge. Vigilantism, extremism, and reckless Takfeer have historically been the cause of much violence and strife.

This course explores the history of extremism in Takfeer, the view of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, and common misconceptions or controversies that are relevant to the world today.
