I was just a wee sprout myself on my first ever rescue mission. Our platoon boys had been given daft nicknames – like ‘Spark’, ‘Glow’, ‘Wiggle’ and ‘Sneak’. No one knew why really, but do I remember us all being incredibly grumpy. It was the heat.
Captain Crumble was his usual jolly self however. That morning, he burst into the Officer’s mess with more than his usual gusto, and (of course) tried to take over.
“Top Secret Mission for you boys,” he bellowed. “All very hush hush, you know,” he tweaked and twirled his moustache for special effect. “Behind enemy lines and all that,” he exclaimed.
“Pay attention men!”
But everyone just sat round ignoring him. Glow winced and gave a quiet, grumpy toot on his horn.
“Over to you, Nobody!” he bellowed even louder.
“Nobody?” …. “NOBODY!”
“Mmm?” said Nobody, gazing out the window. “Over to YOU!”
