There are a lot of unattributed illustrations in this month’s edition. We usually like to print the name of a photographer or artist where possible, but in this case that would be difficult without extensive research.

Many readers will know that the sale of Saint Nicolas’ Place has been a protracted process. As the building has been emptied, an astonishing collection of items has come to light, many of them accumulated over decades. Among these discoveries is an assortment of paintings, sketches and prints showing our ancient buildings at different points in their history. Some appear to be accurate representations; others are more imaginative. Many are unsigned and undated, but all deserve a wider audience.

Sadly, we do not have room to store everything we have found, so some items will need to be sold or offered to museums. We will not let them go, however, without making a photographic record for future generations to enjoy. Some of those photographs have already been taken and appear here, including on our front and back covers. One of my favourites is the watercolour on page 39, showing the chancel of St Nicolas’ Church as it appeared before the Victorian renovation of the building.

Appropriately, this month’s magazine also includes an article from Claire Lindow on the benefits of art; Michael Kennedy introduces us to yet another famous name associated with Kings Norton; and Steve Wright reflects on 40 years as a lay preacher. There is plenty here to feed both mind and soul. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed putting it together.
