"Bea… wasn't you," Parker finally admitted softly.

A long electric moment settled in the tight space between them. Caroline couldn't stop the way her heart raced in her chest, couldn't stop her chest from rising and falling. She wrenched her gaze away, feeling overwhelmed, and missed the way Parker's gaze swept over her shaking frame once more, his jaw clenching.

"I feel like I'm going insane," Caroline muttered under her breath meekly.

Parker shifted closer to her just then, his hands dropping soothingly to her waist to rub gentle circles into her hips. "You mean like those women with hysteria?"

His breath was suddenly fanning her flushed skin at the base of her skirt. When Caroline raised her gaze to find his in the dim light, she startled at the look of dark possession that clouded his eyes.

"Yes?" she replied softly, confused.

"Well, then, I guess we'll have to take a page from those doctors' medical books then, won't we?" Parker eyed her, giving her a moment to push him away, to yell at him, to run off.

But, Caroline could only watch him, transfixed, and do nothing more than give him a small nod.

Without hesitation, Parker's hand crept under the thin cotton of her skirt, gliding along the inner walls of her thighs.
