Urban Air Mobility Trends

Transportation industry is yet to benefit completely from the radical and disruptive transformations in many of its enabling technologies. Since its inception, fulfilling the basic objectives of moving people and freight from one point to another, the transportation industry has played a crucial role in every nation’s economy. Through that journey, we are now in a phase where congestion and traffic problems have become serious
issues for urban planners. Often cited as an example, in 2014 the Brazilian metropolis of Sao Paulo endured a record setting rush-hour traffic that stretched out for 344 km around the city. Similar traffic challenges steal resources and talent that could have been more productively deployed elsewhere in the society.

As smart cities take shape with new modes of transportation for reduced commute time, the abovementioned challenges will be replaced with continued economic progress and social satisfaction. We are reaching an inflexion point where technology has matured sufficiently to create flying cars for mass adoption.

While some pieces of the puzzle are still in flux including new regulations, safety measures, and infrastructural considerations, we are much closer to this reality than we were even just a couple of years ago. As Dubai adopts flying cars as a mode of transport this year with Singapore following suit, the future has definitely arrived just as predicted in the movie Back to the Future.
